Autopac Insurance FAQs

How do I insure a vehicle?

To operate a vehicle on Manitoba roads, you must have valid vehicle registration and Autopac insurance. Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) offers different automobile insurance options. These include Basic Autopac, which is required and includes personal injury, all-perils, and third-party liability insurance. Additionally, you can enhance your coverage with various insurance options such as higher liability limits and reduced deductibles. Autopac insurance can be purchased through over 300 independent Autopac agents.

For more details, please visit the Insuring Your Vehicle page on MPI's website.

How do I pay for my Autopac insurance?

There are many payment options available. You can pay your whole amount due up front or pay in smaller instalments throughout the years.

To understand your payment options and instalments, you can find more information on the Paying for Your Insurance page of MPI's website.

How do I insure a rental vehicle?

When renting or borrowing a vehicle, it's essential to consider insurance coverage. Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) offers Rental Vehicle Insurance, which provides comprehensive coverage at a lower cost compared to rental companies. This insurance covers rented or borrowed private passenger vehicles, light trucks, motorcycles, and mopeds in Canada or the United States. It includes up to $10 million for claims made against you, coverage for damage to rented vehicles, and daily allowances for rental replacement and downtime charges. By choosing MPI's Rental Vehicle Insurance, you can save up to $25 per day.

Learn more about this insurance option on the Rental Vehicle Insurance page of MPI's website.

How do I learn about deductible options?

When it comes to Autopac insurance, deductible options provide you with flexibility. The deductible is the amount you pay as part of a claim, and MPI offers different levels. For private passenger vehicles, the basic deductible is $750. However, you can choose lower deductible levels, such as $500, $300, or $200 (Standard or Plus). Selecting a lower deductible may mean higher premiums but less expense in case of a claim.

To understand your options and compare costs, you can find more information on the Reducing Basic Deductibles page of MPI's website.

How do I calculate my Autopac insurance rate?

Calculating your Autopac insurance rate involves considering your vehicle's risk of a claim, among other factors. MPI provides an online Insurance Rate Calculator to help you estimate your insurance rate based on your vehicle. While the calculator simplifies the process, keep in mind that more detailed rate calculations for certain vehicles, like commercial ones, might require assistance from an insurance broker.

You can access the Insurance Rate Calculator on MPI's website to get an estimate.

How do I cancel my Autopac insurance?

If you wish to cancel your Autopac coverage, you must do so in writing. The process involves completing a cancellation application at an Autopac agent's office. You can either take your licence plates and complete the cancellation application or provide your plates to the agent and receive an immediate cancellation receipt. If you're temporarily taking your vehicle off the road, you can switch to Autopac Lay-up coverage. It's important to note that cancelling your insurance is your responsibility, and coverage continues until cancellation or suspension due to non-payment.

For complete details about the cancellation process and requirements, visit the Refunds and Cancel Insurance page on MPI's website.

Claims FAQs

How do I report my vehicle accident?

If you're involved in a collision, ensure safety first, then move your vehicle to the side. Exchange information with others involved, using the accident report form as a guide. Report the collision to Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) promptly. Reporting is necessary even if there's no damage, as it helps assess the situation accurately. To report, call 204-985-7000 (Winnipeg) or 1-800-665-2410 (outside Winnipeg). Provide details like vehicle registration, accident info, other vehicles/drivers involved, and witness information. An adjuster will guide you through the process.

For detailed steps and to report your vehicle collision, visit the Report a Vehicle Claim page on MPI's website.

What do I do for out-of-province claims?

For comprehensive guidance on out-of-province claims, visit the Out-of-Province Claims page on MPI's website.

How do I get an accident report form?

You can obtain an accident report form by visiting the Accident Report Form page on Manitoba Public Insurance's website. This form is essential for documenting details related to the accident. It's crucial to accurately and comprehensively fill out this form to ensure proper reporting and processing of the incident.

How do I report a non-collision claim?

For non-collision damages (including hail), report to MPI. Call 204-985-7000 (Winnipeg) or 1-800-665-2410 (outside Winnipeg). Provide vehicle registration, damage details, and more. Certain damages also require a police report. You can add a police report number later. Discuss your damage estimate options with an MPI representative.

To report a non-collision claim and understand the process, visit the Report a Vehicle Claim page on MPI's website.

How do I open a glass claim?

Glass claims are efficiently handled using Mitchell Cloud Glass, a web-based application for glass repair shops that simplifies the claims process. Participating glass repair shops can directly register claims for you in Manitoba Public Insurance's systems.

The process is quick and convenient:

  • Contact a participating glass repair shop of your choice to report your glass claim.
  • If the damage occurred due to vandalism in Winnipeg, complete an online report with the Winnipeg Police Service. For damage outside Winnipeg, contact the local police where the damage occurred to file a report.
  • Most vehicles can use Mitchell Cloud Glass, but exceptions require special handling.

Information required when you contact the repair shop:

  • Driver's license document number of the registered vehicle owner (if not available, use the customer number on the vehicle registration).
  • Vehicle registration details.
  • Date and approximate time of the original damage.
  • Vehicle's license plate number, Autopac policy number, information about other insurance, and your customer number.
  • If the vehicle is registered to a company, provide the customer number from the vehicle registration.

Glass claims requiring special handling: Certain glass claims can't be processed through Mitchell Cloud Glass and need to be handled by Manitoba Public Insurance directly. These exceptions include vehicles under Rental Vehicle Insurance, plate transfers, lay-up policies, temporary permits, vehicles with Dealer Plates or Repairer Plates, work paid in advance, motorcycles, mopeds, mobility vehicles, all off-road vehicles, tractors, and trailers.

For these exceptions, contact Manitoba Public Insurance at 204-985-7000 or toll-free at 1-800-665-2410 to report your glass claim.

For more details on opening a glass claim and understanding the process, visit the Glass Claims page on MPI's website.

How do I repair my vehicle?

Start by reporting the incident to MPI. Receive an estimate of the damage, either at a Service or Claim Centre or through participating repair shops. Your estimator assesses the damage and determines repairs. Make an appointment at a qualified repair shop. Avoid self-repair as it may affect insurance coverage. Post-repair checks ensure your vehicle is back to pre-collision condition.

For detailed steps on repairing your vehicle after a claim, visit the Repairing Your Vehicle page on MPI's website.

How do I participate in photo-based estimating?

Eligible for select claims, photo-based estimating allows you to submit photos of vehicle damage. Use the Photo Based Estimating submission tool. An estimator will review the photos and provide an estimate. Follow the tool's guidelines for taking photos and submitting them.

To learn about and participate in photo-based estimating, visit the Photo Based Estimating page on MPI's website.

How do I get my claim information?

Check My Claim provides details about your personal vehicle claims made after May 5, 2023. Enter your MPI claim number, document number (from your driver's license), and the email address provided to MPI when reporting the claim.

Access your claim details through the Check My Claim service provided by MPI.
